Soul Food~What I Learned from the Easter Bunny

A lot can happen in a matter of a couple of days. I had the good fortune to spend a couple of days with my daughter Shayna over Easter weekend and this is what I learned from the Easter Bunny.

  • You’re never too old for family traditions. I’ve been hiding my daughter’s Easter basket for 32 years now, (with the exception of my ten years in Cali). I get just as much JOY and excitement from hiding her basket (and eggs filled with scratch-off lottery tickets) as she does in looking for them. I was never one to fill her basket with candy (even when she was small) OK so she gets ONE chocolate bunny, but mostly little trinkets of things she likes.
  • My memory isn’t as good as it used to be, and I couldn’t remember where I hid all the eggs…so there still is one missing egg in her house with a lottery ticket in it. I learned to take more pictures with my phone, if your memory goes at least you have the photos.
  • Shayna splits all the holidays up between her step-mom and family and me. As the years go by, I’m getting much better with this…being a Cancer this is challenging. However, I’ve come to understand it’s much better to spread the love than keep it all to yourself. There is some truth to age brings wisdom!
  • When you let go of expectations, the Universe brings you more than you could’ve asked for. I had bought a ham and the fixings that go with it for me to eat while my daughter visited with her step-family. Since they always make a huge Holiday feast, I’m not expecting her to eat with me (although I secretly always hoped). This year she came home hungry because she planned on eating with me. (She did let me know before she left, so I planned my dinner for when she came back from her visit.)

A good friend of mine had a serious accident this past week and is lucky to be alive. He is young and has a new bride with two children they’ve raised together. I’ve been reminded, once again, that life is fleeting. Here today and in a matter of an instant could be gone tomorrow. Don’t wait for the Easter Bunny to bring you a basket filled with joy, live each day as if YOU were the Easter Bunny and drop eggs filled with love, sharing, and kindness wherever you may go.
