Did you Fall off the Horse? Tips for Getting Back in the Saddle to Success

What do you, I, and the world at large have in common with the Pope or even the President?

MISTAKES!!!

We’ve all been there, you, me, the government, even the Pope! Hell, even Tony Robbins has made mistakes and HUGE ones, as a matter of fact. I can say that because I’ve watched many of his seminars and attended a few. I’ve heard him tell stories of his life as a young child and when he made his first million. Plus, a plethora of stories of the mistakes he’s made and how he learned from them.

This past weekend, I didn’t reach all my goals; hell, I didn’t even reach a tenth of them. Did I feel like I fell too far off the beaten track, and the road to getting back on was not even in sight? Did I feel like I’ve taken three steps forward and five steps backward? Hell yeah, I did!!!

What did I do about it? I decided to write a blog about it to share my life and all my mistakes with you. WHY? Same reason I’ve been writing this blog for twenty-plus years now and sharing all my stories, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

First, to know that you’re not alone; we all make mistakes.

Second to share with you the lessons I’ve learned from countless mishaps, mistakes, blunders, and outright failures in my life.

Third, to empower you to get back on the damn horse. Get back in the saddle and ride baby ride. All is not lost; nothing is lost; if you learn one thing, that’s right. Just one thing learned from the colossal mistake is still worth it.

A gentleman did a study with monkeys years ago, where the monkeys looked in a specific direction when shown one of two images. The monkeys who successfully looked in the intended direction were awarded a drop of juice, and the others who didn’t look in the intended direction received nothing. The study showed that brain activity increased significantly in the monkeys who succeeded and had little or no brain activity in the other group. The study teaches that SUCCESS IS DETERMINED BY MINDSET AND DRIVE, THAT GIVING IN TO FAILURE PRODUCES ABSOLUTLEY NO POSITIVE RESULTS, and that success breeds increased and continued success.

I know you’re a pretty smart cookie, and I don’t need to spell it out to you. Not only does success breed success, but failure makes me feel depressed and unmotivated unless, of course, I GET BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN!

Here are my seven tips for handling failure or turning lemons into lemonade.

Here’s a quick video of me elaborating on these seven simple steps!

  • acknowledge you made the damn mistake, don’t dwell or take it personally
  • take notes; this is HUGE!
  • identify, like a road map, create a new route (i.e., my trip across the country 1st & then 2nd time)
  • break it down, segment it out (Shayna cleaning her room as a kid, I wrote ONE thing only on a dry erase board at a time & told her to do that ONE thing, i.e., put your books away)
  • Recognize YOU, and ONLY you are responsible; get the hell out of the victim neighborhood; you’re never going to climb the ladder of success blaming everyone else for YOUR mistakes
  • Keep a journal of past challenges & successes; remind yourself how you’ve beaten the odds time & time again!
  • GET BACK ON THE DAMN HORSE!
