Soul Food-Ways in Which You Can Be a Light in the Darkness

September 7, 2020by Eva Starr0

In these times of darkness in the world, with all the divisiveness, the social unrest, the political slander, the quarantines, people are growing more apart instead of closer together. What can “we” do? Yes, “we” aren’t we supposed to be “all in this together?” From some of the posts I see on FB with everyone criticizing this athlete, this victim, this cop, this political party, this neighbor, this boss, this etc. etc. etc. it looks to me like we couldn’t be farther from coming together. Let’s just STOP! Why can’t  we all look for the “light” in someone? It takes a helluva lot more energy to fight, to frown, to disagree, to be angry, to hold onto resentments, to be stubborn, to destroy, then to love, to be positive, to forgive. We weren’t born to hate, we were taught it…

Here’s some easy ways, we can start right now, to “be a light”:

  • send a snail mail note (I’m the Queen of snail mail, I should buy stock in the post office)
  • hold the door for someone (are you in that much of a hurry?)
  • say hello on your morning/evening walk
  • just LISTEN, don’t interrupt people while they are talking, you’ll get your turn
  • give someone a sincere compliment (I always look for the “one” thing I like about someone  (the color of their nails, their bracelet, their cologne, their jeans, their sandals, their eyes, the list is endless)
  • when you have 5o thousand items in your cart for Christ Sakes, let someone go in front of you with only a few items
  • offer to help, just because for no other reason than that
  • talk to a stranger, seriously you won’t get die by saying a kind word
  • tell the people in your life how much they mean to you (DAILY)
  • take a friend out for coffee or tea, or a meal, it doesn’t have to break the bank
  • just be kind, is it really that difficult to “just be kind?”
  • send a card for absolutely no reason at all (I do this & it brings me great joy)
  • be a positive vibe, you think 60,000 thoughts a day, let the majority of them be “good mojo”
  • look someone in the eyes when you speak with them, & for goodness sakes, put your phone away when you’re having an in person conversation
  • share the wealth, spread your blessings around, you can’t out give God, it’s virtually impossible
  • be grateful, there are way more things to be grateful for in this world then not, (I’ve been keeping a gratitude journal for 40+ years)
  • cook a meal
  • buy flowers
  • let someone at the traffic light go in front of you, again are you in THAT much of a hurry
  • pay it forward
  • and lastly SMILE, it takes less muscles to smile than frown

I’m going to leave you with this video by Thomas Rhett

Rhett and his collaborators have announced that they will donate all proceeds from the song to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund.
Blessings to all, thank you for your continued support,
Eva Star
